3D week 5

Class presentations
Today we had some presentations by some of our class mates about their design work/ ideas that they will be producing. Jarrod was the first to go up and talk about his custom portfolio design, where he would be making his own portfolio ( the container or folder for his work) out of wood he says, with his own custom drawings either painted onto the wood or etched right into it. For Jessica's designs she was thinking of doing a 3 picture montage of the earth going through the beginning to the middle and then to the end stage. Amelia's design was rather interesting, she is going to make/ design her own lamps/ lanterns.
Design challenges
Jarrod will be challenging his design by using a variety of materials for the outer layer of his portfolio.
Jessica will be heading down to the darwin dump to see if she can pick up materials to make her montages more 3d with things she can find there.
Amelia will be experimenting with different shapes of designs and also what materials to use to make the lanterns out of

PRACTICAL – Design challenge / reflect & refine
30 mins – Choose your most recent 3D design concept from all your current works

My 3D &2D graffiti design
• In your Visual Diary make a list of 2 assumptions about your design

  1. using double side tape to mount and hold up the spray can
  2. materials to mount on, such as cardboard or foam core

• Challenge both of these assumptions

  1. the double side tape will fairly hold the spray can as it may not be to heavy, but then again it might not be strong enough and it will just fall off and rip apart of the design to :S
  2. both materials seem strong and sturdy, so the only issue is the thickness of each, cardboard is rather thin and wouldn't look to great mounted onto the wall, whilst as foam core has some thickness to it and it isn't to thin or to thick but looks rather okay.

• Suggest 2 refinements to solve these challenges

  1. to experiment with different types of double sided tape, maybe ones with a different thickness/ strength of the tape, to see which 1 is stronger and more durable
  2. try mounting a sample on to each material to see how the image looks mounted to the board and then try sticking them to the wall to see how they hold/ look on there

  1. The GROUP EXERCISE is addressed here, so you just need to complete the PRACTICAL for this week to get a grading.

  3. A really good effort to complete this week's work, but still....

    •  Illustrate your thoughts with sketches / diagrams

    More attention to detail please.
